The latest AEW PPV is right around the corner with Forbidden Door 2 and it is shaping up to be the best card the company has put together this year. Nothing against AEW Revolution and Double or Nothing, but those builds were not the greatest. However, things were not all bad at those PPVs. The buy rates were good not to mention the ticket sales. However, those events were saved by particular matches on the card.
The 2023 version of AEW Double or Nothing was nothing spectacular up until the final two matches of the event. The AEW World Title match and Anarchy in the Arena saved the PPV from being an absolute flop. Was it the build to the event? Was it the matches themselves? Was it the crowd? More on that in a minute. The lack of star power or the fact that Tony Khan needs to get AEW back to what it was before it became gimmick matches.

Shock Waves in Pro Wrestling: A McMahon No Longer Owns WWE

Those that follow know that Full Press Wrestling loves all the companies and will tell it like it is. AEW has been great, but as you can see through the numbers on TV, AEW lost a lot of steam and momentum after the All-Out Brawl. That definitely hurt the company and they are trying to make their way back. Now the summer for AEW will be excellent with Forbidden Door 2 in Toronto, All-In at Wembley Stadium, and the start of AEW Collision. But they need that extra something when it comes to star power.
Now that CM Punk is back, the audience should come back. Plus the double main event at Forbidden Door will help that show. But back to AEW Double or Nothing for a minute.

We all know MJF walked away with the AEW World Championship and just put a killer match on with Adam Cole. However, many were unsure how the Four Pillars Four Way match was going to go over. It was a hit with the fans. Though the build to the match had some spotty moments, the match itself was excellent. As a matter of fact, it left fans wanting more.
MJF, Jungle Boy Jack Perry, Darby Allin, and Sammy Guevara put on a great wrestling match. All four men got all their spots in and it brought the crowd back to life. There were even little teases of Jack Perry turning heel. But as we know all these guys can wrestle. But we also knew that MJF was not losing the title to any of these men. But it did not stop them from putting on a great show with near falls that had you guessing who was going to win.
While there were other matches or moments that helped the show, the World Title match gave Double or Nothing respectability. Something it was lacking from previous Double or Nothings in the company’s short history. Again could it have been the venue? Possibly. One thing is for sure AEW should not make it a one-week event anymore. It is too much.
The AEW World Title match was in the semi-main spot. Anarchy in the Arena was in the main event slot. The Blackpool Combat Club taking on the Elite. This was an excellent match. Now, we get it this match is not everyone’s cup of tea. But you what AEW puts this match on so well.
The history between all these men is something special. Especially Jon Moxley and Kenny Omega, considering their feud started at this event in 2019. It was a bloody mess. The gang warfare displayed was great. The fact, that the band played Wild Thing three times over kept the crowd in this match. Not to mention some of the spots in the match itself.
In the end, it was the Blackpool Combat Club getting the victory as Don Callis cost Kenny Omega the match. Callis’s distraction allowed Konosuke Takeshita to blindside Omega, who had the match in control. The Young Bucks and Hangman Adam Page set everything up for Omega to hit Wheeler Yuta with the One-Winged Angel. Instead, it was Yuta pinning Omega for the victory.
Bryan Danielson, Claudio Castagnoli, Moxley, and Yuta celebrated the victory as the show went off the air. The crowd was hot for the match and the ending. This finish has led to some great follow-up storylines on AEW Dynamite.
These two matches saved AEW Double or Nothing from being a total flop setting up what is going to be a fun summer for All Elite Wrestling.
