Hangman Adam Page Finally Did It! He Finally Did It!

Adam Page left Full Gear as the new All Elite Wrestling World Champion. This was a match two years in the making between Hangman Adam Page and Kenny Omega. There were a lot of twists and turns as Page said after the event, but they finally got to the match and the point where Page was going to win the World Championship.

It was an amazing night of professional wrestling inside the Target Center in Minneapolis, Minnesota. From top to bottom it was one of the best Full Gear cards AEW has put together in the company’s history. Every match was four-star quality or even better. But everyone was there and watching on PPV for one match and one match only and that was Kenny Omega vs Adam Page.

This match was a culmination of a more than two-year-long storyline, that is still not finished just yet. Entering the match, Omega continued to bring up how Page could never win the big match. Remember when the company first started, Omega put aside his singles run for the betterment of the company. Omega lost to Chris Jericho in the first Double or Nothing as the winner went on to face Page at the first All Out for the AEW World Championship. Page said he would win the title, but came up short as Jericho was the first-ever AEW World Champion.

But who was there to pick him up his buddies in The Elite. Soon Omega and Page formed a nice bond winning the AEW World Tag Team Titles. But when they lost to FTR, Page’s insecurities showed up again. Omega left him and his friends the Young Bucks left him too. The whole build was nicely portrayed on Being The Elite. Each week you could see Omega’s heel turn coming and the Bucks wanting less and less to with Page.

But that is what makes AEW so great is the long-term storytelling. With four big PPVs, there is no need to rush through storylines. Similar to what the old WWF was like in the 1980s and 1990s. Then Omega and Page would meet at Full Gear a year ago in the AEW World Title Eliminator Tournament finals. Entering the match, while there was a slight glimmer of hope Page was going to win, you knew it was Omega’s time to shine. And that is exactly what happened.

The heel turn of Omega was complete after stealing away the AEW World Title from Jon Moxley. During that time period, the Young Bucks won the AEW World Tag Team titles as well. But who was not there to celebrate and had to watch from the sidelines, none other than Hangman Adam Page. And you could see it was eating at him inside. In the storyline, these guys were supposed to hold all the gold in AEW. They all left New Japan Pro Wrestling to form this company, but Page because of his insecurities could never reach the top of the mountain.

Hangman Adam Page worked his way back up the rankings to finally be the number one contender with the help of some new friends. Though he was reluctant to join the Dark Order or be in a group after what happened with The Elite. The payoff for Page was supposed to be at All Out, the spot he originally lost the AEW World Title. However, real-life got in the way as his wife was pregnant and asked for time off.

So what does the company do, they incorporate into the storyline. During Fyter Fest and Fight of the Fallen, Page and the Dark Order battle the Elite for the right to get matches for AEW World Title and AEW World Tag Team Titles. This match was an elimination match. And of course, Hangman Adam Page is the last one for his team. And again there is hope he is going to finally pull this thing off. But alas the Bucks and Omega get his way costing him a title shot. He is written off the television in August to be with his wife.

Omega runs through new challengers and you thought with the way the Omega-Danielson match ended in Dynamite Grand Slam, Omega is going to keep the title for a while. However, when Adam Page returned as the joker in the Casino Ladder Match, the crowd became unglued. You knew then this guy was winning the match and the championship against Omega at Full Gear.

As Tony Kahn stated after the event, he knew who the first four champions in the company’s history were going to be before anyone else did. And Hangman Adam Page was one of them. Just getting there took some time. But the payoff was well worth the wait.

To add another piece to this whole storyline, the Young Bucks were not there for Page in his first crack at the title. Page made a comment to both Nick and Matt Jackson on the go-home edition Rampage stating if they interfered in the match, he was going to make their lives a living hell. And the way AEW drops nuggets you knew something was going down with the Bucks in the end.

What a match Omega and Page put on to close Full Gear. Both men traded blows and big spots. And as the Hangman was going for the final Buck Shot Lariat there is Nick Jackson pausing while Matt Jackson nods to Page as he hits Omega with his finisher and gets the 1, 2, 3 and becomes the new AEW World Champion. The Bucks were not there the first time, but they were sure there this time.

The fans went home happy with Hangman Adam Page going to a new level winning the title against his former friend Kenny Omega. The right guy won as a payoff to this incredible storyline that dates back longer than AEW.

AEW understands long-term storytelling and that is why they have made professional wrestling fun again to watch.
