On Saturday night inside Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas at the WWE’s Biggest Party of the Summer, Summerslam, The Man Becky Lynch made her return.
Becky Lynch Return Is Botched
This should have been a bigger deal than it was as it was handled poorly. Just like her moment at Wrestlemania 35 should have been a bigger deal than it was. And that is no knock on Becky Lynch herself, but WWE did not book her return the right way. On Friday night’s AEW Rampage “The First Dance,” it was the worst kept secret in the wrestling world with CM Punk returning to wrestling after seven years and the reaction was a pop like we have not seen in years. Everyone knew what was coming and AEW delivered unlike what we saw at Summerslam.
WWE had a moment to recapture that same pop Saturday night in Las Vegas. However, once again the company botched another return. WWE had eight days to prepare for the Smackdown Women’s title match which was originally to be Sasha Banks vs Bianca Belair II, but instead, they just threw something against the wall and hoped it would stick. Sasha vs Bianca was in trouble when both missed shows last weekend. That is when WWE should have stopped advertising the match and said Bianca Belair would take on a mystery opponent.
But in typical WWE fashion, they continued to advertise the match and again undelivered. Instead of having Becky coming out and be the mystery opponent for Bianca, they had to bring out Carmella which killed the crowd reaction because the fans had seen this match 16 times already. The match starts and then Lynch comes out. While the crowd goes nuts, there is not much of a reaction. Imagine if she had just come out without the other setup. Something the crowd probably isn’t expecting and her music hits. While it may not be CM Punk levels, she gets the reaction she deserves.
What Happened To Tearing the House Down
One of the most popular women’s wrestlers in decades, who got herself over, has been teasing for months about coming back. And when she comes back she says she wants to tear the house down with one of the best up-and-coming women’s wrestlers in the business. And Bianca agrees. But instead, the match is quick like 25 seconds, similar to when Brock Lesnar beat Kofi Kingston for the WWE Championship. How does this help Becky? Heck, they just buried Bianca who won the women’s Royal Rumble and headlined a Wrestlemania. Granted Bianca was never retaining in this spot with Becky and Sasha. But considering fans were robbed there is no pop because this wasn’t a match it was a moment.
Again nothing against Lynch, this is the best WWE could do last minute, but they could have played off her teases on social media. Especially the last couple of PPV events. And it would have had a similar reaction to what we saw with AEW. Now whether or not Lynch was ready for the ring is a different story and if she was not, then WWE needed to book this match differently.
Not Ring Ready
Say Becky was not ring ready, then there were other ways to book this match at Summerslam. First, they could have used Asuka who has not be doing anything on RAW. This would have been a solid match and Lynch could have returned after Bianca retained to set up a match later on in the year. Second, what about Toni Storm, where has she been since being called up from NXT. Again have Bianca retain and then Lynch come out to challenge her. That way this gives Becky more time to prepare for the ring and have a suitable match with Bianca Belair. WWE does right by Bianca and gives the fans the proper match they deserve. Instead of what we saw at Summerslam.
Again not knocking Lynch, she did not do anything wrong, but WWE could have handled her return a lot better and give her the reaction she rightfully deserves.
